OOD SALOME "fin de siècle", from literature to art
17 mars 2021After studying the character of Salome in two rewritings of a biblical myth from different genres, cultures and times :
- a 19th century French tale : « Hérodias » written by Gustave Flaubert
- a play written in French in the 20th century by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde : « Salomé »
students read three excerpts from literary works that were written between the two works studied and that used the myth on different purposes :
- Huysmans in "A Rebours", who paid tribute to the painter Moreau using the ekphrasis process
-Mallarmé, who used the myth as a symbol of his conception of Symbolist poetry, in an unfinished poetic play : "Herodias"
-Laforgue who demystified the character in a parodic work : "Legendary moralities".
Students have to associate each work with an image. Then, they select 3 quotations from each work and compare them with each image. They offer their analyses in a powerpoint written in French and then present their powerpoints in English to their classmates.
